The word symphony comes from the Greek words syn- and phone, which the Greeks used to define concepts related to 'harmony'. Since the 18th century, this term began to be used in relation to a musical form mainly derived from the sonata, but also from the prelude, suite, and overture.
As part of the Polish Presidency 2011, the Polish Chamber Choir performed on December 3, 2011, in the RADIALSYSTEM V space in Berlin.

Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the most important Polish composers of contemporary music, in his Symphony No. 3 Passacaglia - Allegro Moderato presents us with extraordinarily deep emotions and intensity of sounds. This composition found its place as a sound track in the film "Shutter Island," emphasizing the drama and mysterious character of the story. Symphony No. 3 is a reference to the Baroque form of passacaglia, where the recurring motif, called basso ostinato, is the foundation of the composition. Penderecki uses this motif as a structural point of reference on which he builds further musical development. Interestingly, he combines tradition with modernity here, creating an unusual and original blend of styles. In the piece, we can discern certain elements characteristic of the era of musical avant-garde, from which Penderecki's ideas crystallized. The extraordinary penchant for the use of powerful fortes and chaotic passages creates a sense of unease and tension. The composer combines instrumental sounds with vocal ones, creating extremely dense sound textures. One of the most significant aspects we can observe in this symphony is the extraordinary virtuosity of the performers. Penderecki expects the orchestra and choir to fully dedicate themselves to the music and the tension he conveys. He creates incredibly emotional and intense moments that can touch the listener's soul. Krzysztof Penderecki's Symphony No. 3 is a masterpiece full of unpredictable turns, contrasts, and intense sounds. It leaves the listener with a strong emotional and reflective experience. It is one of the most important works of this composer and an absolute must for every lover of serious music.

Penderecki is a brilliant artist whose compositions always leave a lasting impression.
