The name of this musical form comes from the Italian word suonare meaning "to sound". In the past (17th century), a sonata was an instrumental piece for multiple voices and thus became the opposite of a vocal cantata.
Alongside Beethoven and Mozart, a great representative of Viennese classicism. Considered the father of the symphony, sonata, and string quartet, he contributed to the flourishing of these musical forms, which survived almost intact until the beginning of the 20th century.
"Every private has a marshal's baton in his backpack and thinks he will be a general. I knew immediately what I wrote in 1976 and now I know too," said Henryk Mikołaj Górecki about his III Symphony - "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" in 1993. Today, almost a year after the composer's death, during a concert at the Wratislavia Cantans festival, we have the opportunity to recall one of the most important musical works of the second half of the 20th century.

Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was a French composer who lived in the 18th century. He was mainly known as a creator of chamber music, and his third sonata, of which the Andante is a fragment, is one of the best examples of his compositional talent. The video features a performance of this sonata by three talented musicians: Laura Brzezicka on flute and Marta Jakubiec and Bartosz Bury on violins. Additionally, Michalina Jakubiec plays the harpsichord, contributing to a fuller sound and introducing delicate harmonies to the piece. The performers presented this sonata in the Concert Hall of the S. Moniuszko State Music School in Bielsko-Biała, while also learning about the creative genius of Bodin de Boismortier. Their interpretation is perfectly coordinated, and each musician extracts sounds from their instruments with a rich palette of emotions and subtleties. The Andante, which can be heard in this fragment, is primarily a melancholic piece of a reflective nature. It is here that we have the opportunity to experience the interpretative skills of the musicians. Their ability to create delicate moods, precise articulation, and fluid dialogue between instruments is exceptional. The Andante sonata by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier is an ideal example of baroque music. His creativity was well rooted in this era, influencing the development of the genre. This series of sonatas, of which this is a part, is not only a significant contribution to the musical literature of the 18th century but also an excellent testament to the versatility of the composer. In summary, the performance of the third sonata by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, especially its Andante fragment, by Laura Brzezicka, Marta Jakubiec, Bartosz Bury, and Michalina Jakubiec, is a perfect example of these musicians' ability to interpret baroque music. Their passionate performance in the Concert Hall of the S. Moniuszko State Music School in Bielsko-Biała pays tribute to the memory of Magda Kania and reminds us of the values of classical music.
It was an amazing performance! Laura Brzezicka on the flute, Marta Jakubiec and Bartosz Bury on violins, and Michalina Jakubiec on the harpsichord created a wonderful harmony. Their interpretation of the III Sonata by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was full of emotion and technical perfection. The concert in memory of Magda Kania at the concert hall of ZPSM named after S. Moniuszko in Bielsko-Biała will surely stay in my memory. It was not only an exceptional musical experience but also a tribute to an outstanding artist. I am glad that I could be a part of this event and admire the talent and determination of these young musicians.
