Jan Křtitel Vaňhal, also known as Johann Baptist Wanhal, was a Czech composer and virtuoso violinist who lived in the 18th century. He was born in 1739 in Nechanice, in what is now the Czech Republic. He was one of the most esteemed and popular composers of his time. The double bass concerto presented in this video is one of Vaňhal's most well-known and valued works. This concerto requires not only the virtuoso skills of the double bassist but also excellent technique and expression. Rinat Ibragimov, the principal double bassist of the London Symphony Orchestra, handled this demanding part superbly, showcasing both technical precision and emotional depth. It is worth noting that the double bass concerto is a rather rarely performed piece.
