The name of this musical form comes from the Italian word suonare meaning "to sound". In the past (17th century), a sonata was an instrumental piece for multiple voices and thus became the opposite of a vocal cantata.

Fryderyk Chopin was a Polish composer born in 1810. His Second Piano Sonata, also known as "Marche funèbre," is one of the most recognizable works in his repertoire. Chopin was a pianist of extraordinary talent, whose music influenced a wide audience on a large scale. In the interpretation by Piotr Lachert, we had the pleasure of hearing incredible emotionality and technical excellence. Lachert is an acclaimed pianist who can play Chopin with passion and sensitivity, conveying both the delicacy and strength of the piece. "Marche funèbre" is part of the second movement of the sonata and is an eloquent tribute to the deceased. Undoubtedly, this piece is distinguished by its sad and solemn tone, which is characteristic of the Romantic era. Chopin masterfully utilizes pianistic virtuosity to express grief and melancholy. It is important that this piece has much greater significance than just a melodic cry of sorrow. Chopin employs various changes in tempo and dynamics to evoke feelings of sadness, longing, and tragedy. This is a piece that requires a lot of emotional sensitivity from the performer to convey the depth and intensity of its emotions. Justyna Philipp - the pianist who accompanied Lachert that evening - also contributed to the excellence of this interpretation. Her stylistic approach and technical skills add even greater depth and completeness to this challenging piece. Chopin's Second Piano Sonata "Marche funèbre" is still considered a masterpiece of piano music today. Its beauty, sensitivity, and deep emotions have made this work one of the most well-known and valued pieces in the history of music. Thanks to such talented performers as Piotr Lachert and Justyna Philipp, we can appreciate and draw even greater joy from it.
This interpretation of Chopin's II Piano Sonata is absolutely stunning! Piotr Lachert is an amazing pianist, and Justyna Philipp certainly has extraordinary skills. Their collaboration produced a wonderful effect. Marche funèbre seems to come alive, transporting us to a completely different world of emotions. Hearing these sounds, I feel sadness, but at the same time, beautiful melancholy. It is a magnificent performance that will certainly stay with me for a long time. I would like to hear more such pieces in the future.
