Franz Liszt is an outstanding composer, pianist, and conductor, regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the Romantic period. His work "Transcendental Étude No. 4 in D minor, Mazeppa" is one of the twelve études composed during his creative period. "Mazeppa" is one of Liszt's most demanding works for both the pianist and the audience. It combines a legendary story with masterful pianistic technique. The étude tells the life of Hetman Ivan Mazeppa, a Ukrainian military leader who was entranced by love for one of the court ladies. Liszt perfectly captures in his piece the trials that Mazeppa went through, from a picturesque beginning through dynamic and aggressive passages to an emotionally moving conclusion. In this interpretation of the work for piano, we can admire the talent and virtuosity of Lazar Berman, a renowned Soviet pianist. This is amazing! Lazar Berman performs Liszt's "Mazeppa" in an absolutely fascinating way. His technique on the piano is incredible, and the dynamics and emotions he brings to this piece make it so I can't take my eyes off this video. This composition is extremely demanding, but Berman handles it perfectly. His interpretation captivates me from the very first notes and keeps me in suspense until the last note. It's a true feast for the ears and eyes. Berman literally plays at the edge of possibility, which makes this performance so incredibly captivating. I get the impression that even Liszt would be proud of this performance. Simply mastery!
