A French composer and pianist belonging to the famous group Les Six (which also included Milhaud, Honegger, Auric, Tailleferre, and Durey). He was born in Paris in 1899, and his musical vocation appeared relatively early.
The name of this musical form comes from the Italian word suonare meaning "to sound". In the past (17th century), a sonata was an instrumental piece for multiple voices and thus became the opposite of a vocal cantata.

Francis Poulenc, one of the most important composers of the 20th century, often reached for unusual instrumentation in his works. His Flute Sonata is a perfect example of using the flute and piano as equal musical partners. The composition consists of four parts, the first of which, "Allegretto malinconico," showcases the characteristic features of Poulenc's style. In this part, one can hear the influences of neoclassicism and impressionism, which were significant elements of his creativity. Melancholic yet melodic melodies are interwoven with dance motifs, creating a subtle contrast in the mood of the piece. In the performance of this work, Emmanuel Pahud, one of the most outstanding contemporary flute talents, plays the flute. His interpretation is a mastery of technique and expressiveness, perfectly conveying the emotions hidden in Poulenc's music. Partnering with him on piano is Eric Le Sage, who is also renowned for his outstanding interpretations of chamber music. His playing is full of sensitivity and precision, while also reflecting the characteristic dialogue between Pahud's flute sound and the piano accompaniment. It is worth emphasizing that this Flute Sonata is among the most popular works in the flute duo repertoire. Francis Poulenc created a unique piece here that highlights the uniqueness and versatility of the instruments. His composition fits perfectly into the context of the era in which he lived, while also remaining relevant and inspiring for contemporary artists.
A beautiful interpretation of Francis Poulenc's Flute Sonata! Emmanuel Pahud is definitely a master in his field, and Eric Le Sage plays beautifully on the piano. Their performance brings me a lot of emotions, especially in the Allegretto malinconico. The melancholic atmosphere of this piece is conveyed in an incredibly suggestive way. An excellent performance, full of expression and delicacy. This video shows that music has the power to move and engage the listener in an emotional journey. I am impressed!
