The name of this musical form comes from the Italian word suonare meaning "to sound". In the past (17th century), a sonata was an instrumental piece for multiple voices and thus became the opposite of a vocal cantata.

Sonata in A major by Domenico Scarlatti is a baroque work written in the harpsichord style. Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was an Italian composer and harpsichord virtuoso. He was the son of the famous composer Alessandro Scarlatti, but he built his own reputation as a pianist and composer independently. His most well-known work is "Sonatas for Harpsichord," of which the Sonata in A major is an excellent example. The video features a performance of the Sonata in A major by a musical ensemble consisting of Sławomir Dróżdż and Mariola Żebrowska on traverso flute, Aleksandra Radwańska and Antonina Krzyżowska on violins, Urszula Jasiecka-Bury on harpsichord, and Mariusz Bury on theorbo. The performance took place in the Concert Hall of the S.P. Moniuszko State Music School in Bielsko-Biała as part of a concert in memory of Magda Kania. The traverso flute, also known as the transverse flute, is a wooden wind instrument popular during the baroque period. The violin is the most recognizable string instrument, while the harpsichord and theorbo are string instruments often used in baroque music. Scarlatti wrote during a period known as the late baroque. Characteristic of this era is the use of sharp dynamics, contrasts in tempo, and expressive melodies. The Sonata in A major is full of virtuosity and interesting harmonies, which is typical of Scarlatti's creativity. The video is an excellent example of baroque music, which combines elegant composition with interesting instruments and performance possibilities. The ensemble's performance highlights the technical precision and interpretative skills of the musicians. Sonata in A major by Domenico Scarlatti is an excellent choice for lovers of baroque music and those who want to explore the work of this remarkable composer.
