The son of the esteemed violinist Giovanni Battista Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678. At the age of 25, he was ordained as a priest and became known as the "red priest". He became a violin teacher at the Hospital of Mercy and a conductor of the orchestra in Venice, which was highly renowned at that time.
On Saturday, March 23, 2019, the CIX concert from the series "Great Music in the Small Hall" organized by the Warsaw University of Technology took place. Although the concert was held in the Large Hall of the Polytechnic, the concert series retained its name for historical reasons.
The spring concert of the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw is a meeting with three composers of the Romantic era, who – each in their own way – broke the boundaries of musical form and expression.

The concert "Szczygie" (Il Gardellino) by A. Vivaldi is one of the most well-known and esteemed baroque works. This masterpiece by the Italian composer was composed in D minor and consists of four parts. For centuries, this piece has delighted and inspired both listeners and performers. It is worth noting that the recording of this concert features outstanding artists. Giovanni Antonini, a talented flutist and conductor, perfectly conveys the emotions and beauty of this piece. Meanwhile, Enrico Onofri and Marco Bianchi, renowned violinists, bring their individual styles to the solo performance. Paolo Beschi, through his cello playing, adds depth and harmony to the piece. An interesting role in this concert is played by the lute, performed by Luca Pianca. This instrument integrates beautifully into the whole, adding a specific color and delicacy to the piece. One cannot forget the harpsichord, played with exceptional sensitivity by Luca Guglielmi. Thanks to him, we can feel the clarity and contrast of this work. Formally, the concert "Szczygie" is a true masterpiece of baroque art. It consists of three parts with diverse moods and dynamics. The opening piece, Allegro, is filled with great energy and enthusiasm, which almost sweeps the listener into a whirlpool of musical emotion. The second part, Largo e cantabile, is a true cascade of melodic beauty and bliss. Finally, in Allegro, we are once again swept away by the dynamic rhythm and virtuosity of the soloists. The baroque era, in which this piece was created, was characterized by a tremendous emphasis on expression and emotional richness. The concert "Szczygie" is a perfect example of this. Through its wonderful melodies, nuanced playing, and rich harmonies, this piece invites us on a journey full of expressive power and passion. This concert is a work of art that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on every listener.
