The trumpet is a small brass wind instrument with a bright, metallic sound and the largest range among all brass wind instruments. In the past, trumpets were built without valves and only selected sounds could be produced on them (so-called natural sounds obtained in various ways of blowing). At the beginning of the 19th century, valves began to be used in the trumpet, allowing for a full chromatic scale. The trumpet is a transposing instrument and is played in various keys (most commonly B). In a symphony orchestra, trumpets are used to lead melodies, as well as in jazz bands.
