Sylvie Courvoisier Trio at the Lutosławski Studio

Program 2 of Polish Radio and the Jazzarium Foundation invite you on June 13, 2015, at 20:30 to the Witold Lutosławski Studio for a concert by the Sylvie Courvoisier Trio. The band features the outstanding pianist and composer, along with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Kenny Wollesen.

Sylvie, one of the most creative pianists on the jazz scene, combines excellent technique with a vast imagination that crosses classical, jazz, improvisation, and other genres. 'All Music Guide' wrote about her creativity: 'The music of Sylvie Courvoisier is as beautiful aesthetically as it is mysterious, and is just another testament to her compositional skills.'

Thanks to the dynamic rhythm section of Kenny Wollesen and Drew Gress, their music combines the best of improvisation and composition in the classic piano trio format. After three years of work, a project emerged showcasing new, fascinating musical flavors.

Sylvie Courvoisier on her new lineup: 'Drew and Kenny are (...) both wonderful musicians and wonderful people. Drew has a beautiful sound and a unique rhythmic sensitivity, while Kenny has a wonderful sense of lightness and freedom and great dynamic potential. This music has more rhythm and emotion than in most of my previous work; the material is varied - from very carefully composed pieces interspersed with improvisations drawing from jazz tradition to sections that are very open and free.'

Drew Gress – bassist and composer, born in Yardley, Pennsylvania (USA, 1959). He regularly performs with artists from the forefront of the contemporary improvised music scene. He has performed in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. He has also taught at conservatories in St. Petersburg and Paris. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer, and Chamber Music America. He currently resides in New York. His latest project, The Irrational Numbers (Premonition), presents original, authorial compositions arranged for quintet. The artist has in his repertoire, among others: the enthusiastically received albums 7 Black Butterflies (2005), Spin & Drift (2001), and Heyday (1997).

Kenny Wollesen - an American drummer living in New York. In the 90s, he participated in the recordings of over 30 albums and gained a reputation as a talented, versatile, and original artist. He has performed and recorded with the most diverse musicians, from Tom Waits (he participated in his joint project with William S. Burroughs, 'Black Rider') to Sean Lennon and Ron Sexsmith (he performed on his second album 'Other Songs'). He also performs with Bill Frisell and Myra Melford. He was a co-founder of the New Klezmer Trio. Active on the New York jazz and avant-garde scene.
