On this evening, students from the organ class of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław will present a diverse repertoire to music lovers, featuring works by the greatest masters, created for monumental instruments. The program will include such pieces as Fantasy and Fugue in G minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the last compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as well as a more contemporary bolero by Pierre Cochereau. The concert will showcase the wide sound possibilities of the organ, explored by composers throughout the centuries.

Fantasy and Fugue in G minor by Bach was first performed in 1720 when the composer was applying for the position of organist at St. James' Church in Hamburg. The initial themes of the fantasy are essentially typical, rich improvisations of a free character, which later become more structured. In the virtuosic fugue, Bach incorporated the Dutch melody Ik ben gegroet van... as a tribute to Johann Adam Reincken, one of the most distinguished representatives of the North German organ school. The program will also feature Mozart's Fantasy in F minor, characterized by a lofty, at times heroic tone, likely due to the fact that it was dedicated to the memory of Field Marshal Gideon Laudon, a well-regarded and popular commander of the Austrians. This work, published just a few months before Mozart's death, exemplifies the mature, fully crystallized style of the artist.

Next, we will hear Chorale in E major by César Franck, an immensely valued composer and organist of the Romantic era, who is also regarded as the creator of the so-called organ symphonism that began in the 19th century. This trend was characterized by an orchestral approach to the sound of the organ and the use of its technical and tonal possibilities. One of the works in this style is the VI Organ Symphony op. 42 no. 2 by Charles-Marie Widor. During the concert, we will hear its first movement, a dazzling display of figurative virtuosity in Allegro. There will also be a Polish accent. Mieczysław Surzyński is noted in history as the most distinguished representative of the Romantic trend in Polish organ music. He was not only a composer and instrumentalist but also an outstanding pedagogue, improviser, and organizer of musical life in pre-war Poland. Anna Groeger will perform his melodic and energetic Capriccio in F-sharp minor op. 36 no. 3. The concert will conclude with Boléro sur un thème de Charles Racquet, an intriguing arrangement of a Spanish dance by Pierre Cochereau for organ and percussion.
