"The Man with the Golden Flute" was born in Belfast in 1939. He began his musical career as a child playing the flute, and at the age of just 10 he won a music competition in his hometown. He studied at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, as well as at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of Jean-Pierre Rampal. At the age of 30, he was chosen as the first flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic, however, after six years he resigned and decided to start a solo career. It was definitely the right choice. Since then, James has traveled extensively, performing concerts and offering flute lessons. Like his professor Jean-Pierre Rampal, he became one of the first flutists to restore the flute's role as a solo instrument. He gained incredible renown in the world, with composers such as J. Rodrigo and Malcolm Arnold dedicating some of their works to him. His participation in recording the soundtrack for the film 'The Lord of the Rings' also became significant, as the film received an Oscar. In 1977, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire, and in 2001 he received a knighthood. Currently, Sir James Galway is a member of the London Mozart Players and continues his career with his wife Jeanne Galway, who is also a flutist, giving concerts and flute lessons.
