Oboe is a wooden double reed instrument in the shape of a slightly conical whistle with a scale of b-f2. The sound of the oboe is very soft, slightly nasal, reminiscent of the sound of folk instruments. The oboe originated in France in the 17th century as a variation of the popular medieval shawm. The oboe can be found in orchestral and chamber ensembles, and less frequently as a solo instrument. There are different variations of the oboe differing in pitch among them: oboe d'amore, oboe da caccia, which was the precursor of the English horn (an instrument similar to the oboe but slightly larger with a lower and softer sound and a darker tone).

English horn
A wooden double reed instrument, an alto variation of the oboe (sometimes called an alto oboe) with a scale of e-b2. The English horn, with a similar construction to the oboe but slightly larger, sounds a fifth lower, and its tone is softer and fuller. The name "English horn" is accidental and stems from a mistaken interpretation of the French word "anglais" meaning the bend of the reed of the English hunting oboe, from which the English horn originated.
