Love has always been one of the most important sources of inspiration for art – from Shakespeare to Schönberg. Young passion, deep longing, unrequited love, forbidden… Music can speak of all kinds of love.

The reception of Tchaikovsky's famous Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet was at best lukewarm. Once again, in the case of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, neither the public nor the critics recognized the masterpiece. After the solemn introduction of the clarinets and bassoons, the composer introduced two contrasting themes. The first, aggressive and brutal, symbolizes the feuding Capulet and Montague families, while the second is the magnificent love theme of Romeo and Juliet, sung by the English horn and violas. Shakespeare's tragedy and Tchaikovsky's deeply personal life experiences intertwine in this piece, giving us music that alternates between dramatic and beautiful, even to the point of tears. For many music lovers, this might be the most beautiful love music ever created, and the concert taking place on Valentine's Day is a perfect opportunity to listen to it. Not only that.

This evening will also feature the extremely rarely performed Concerto for Violin and Clarinet in B-flat major by Carl Philipp Stamitz. This is a real treat for music lovers. The two instruments have always created an ideal pair and were often combined in popular triple concertos during the Baroque period. Stamitz was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, composing in the Classical era. He left us about 50 symphonies and 60 concertos.

The legacy of the prematurely deceased Mieczysław Karłowicz is much poorer. Eternal Songs is perhaps the most personal work of the patron of the Philharmonic. It is a kind of symphonic triptych. The whole reveals many characteristics typical of post-romantic compositions, and we also find, so characteristic of Karłowicz, lyrical, spatial themes with a Slavic tint. The work takes the form of a symphonic triptych. Each of its parts has a designated title: Song of Eternal Longing, Song of Love and Death, and Song of All-Being. Furthermore, the first is additionally accompanied by the motto Here I stand before you to bring a complaint about my fate!
