He was born in 1948 in Riga, where he briefly studied at the city conservatory. He then moved to Leningrad and at the age of 17 won the first prize at the National Cello Competition. In the same year, he debuted with the Leningrad Philharmonic and became known as the 'Future Rostropovich'. The following year, he won a prize at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, which allowed him to study at the Moscow Conservatory under Rostropovich. During this time, he traveled throughout the Soviet Union, but due to forced labor in 1970, he decided to escape from the USSR. After leaving the country, he settled in Israel. In 1973, he won the Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition in Florence, and then made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The following year, he studied with Gregor Piatigorsky, becoming the only cellist whose teachers were Rostropovich and Piatigorsky. From 1975, he traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, Australia, and the Far East, especially in Japan. His first recording was Brahms' Double Concerto with Gidon Kremer and the Vienna Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein for Deutsche Grammophon. Since then, the artist has recorded for this label. The list of works he has recorded is incredibly long, but it is worth mentioning a few of them: solo sonatas by Bach, Bach and Beethoven sonatas with Martha Argerich, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky trios with Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich, and 4 encore albums with his own transcriptions of songs by Brahms, Schubert, and French composers. In 1995, he returned to Moscow for the first time, where he performed a concert and recorded works by Prokofiev and Miaskovsky with the Russian National Orchestra. Five years later, on the occasion of Bach Year, Mischa performed on many continents, playing 6 solo suites and 3 cello and piano sonatas.
