He graduated with honors in composition in the class of Marian Borkowski (1996) and conducting in the class of Ryszard Dudek (1997) at the Academy of Music in Warsaw. He perfected his conducting skills under the direction of Zoltan Pesko (2000-2002) and Yuri Simonov (2003-2008). He collaborated with orchestras of national and foreign philharmonics. He made many recordings of film music and archival recordings for Polish Radio.
In his work, Żółtowski often uses the experience of non-European musical cultures and oriental instrumentation. His works were performed at many festivals, including the 'Laboratory of Contemporary Music' in Białystok, 'Musica Polonica Nova' in Wrocław, 'Europe - Asia' in Kazan in Tatarstan, 'Two Days and Two Nights of New Music' in Odessa, 'Sound Ways' in St. Petersburg, Composium 1999 in Tokyo and the World Music Days 2002 in Hong Kong.
For his artistic achievements, he twice received scholarships from the Minister of Culture and Art and the Tadeusz Baird scholarship. In 1997, he stayed at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf in Germany as a scholarship holder of the Stiftung Kulturfonds. In 2000, he received a scholarship for young conductors from the Japanese Music Foundation JESC. In 1995, he won the 2nd prize at the National Competition of Young Composers 'Musica Sacra'. He is also a finalist of the International Composition Competition 'Next Millennium' in honor of Toru Takemitsu in Tokyo in 1999.
From 1996 to 2004, Żółtowski was a lecturer at the Academy of Music in Warsaw. From 1994-96, he was the Chairman of the Young Circle of the Polish Composers' Union. From 1995-2000, he served as Secretary General, and from 2001-2003 as President of Jeunesses Musicales de Pologne. Since 2010, he has been the President of the Board of the Polish Society for Contemporary Music. From 2002-2005, he was the artistic director of the Cyprus State Orchestra. Maciej Żółtowski currently serves as the general and artistic director of the Radom Chamber Orchestra.
