Maciej Afanasjew - violinist and composer

He is a graduate of the Academy of Music in Katowice in the class of jazz violin, composition, and arrangement. He also studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz. He is a doctoral student at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz in the class of violin under Prof. Paweł Radziński.

He has collaborated with leading Polish and foreign musicians such as: Erick Allen, Susan and Martin Weinert, Krzysztof Herdzin, Cezary Paciorek, Piotr Biskupski, Maciej Sikala, Piotr Baron, Janusz Skowronek, Karol Szymanowski, Joachim Mencel, Grzegorz Nadolny, Jerzy Główczewski, Uli Rennert, and Matúš Jakabčic. He has performed in most European countries and China, playing at:

Performances featuring Maciej Afanasjew were broadcasted by TVP 2 ("I love what I like" by Wojciech Mann), 3 PR program (concert and recording of Basi Raduszkiwicz's album "Wild rose" in the Agnieszka Osiecka studio), Český Rozhlas, Magyar Televízió, and TVP Katowice ("Whistles with jazz" and "Art round").

He won the second prize at the National Competition of Young Musicians in Bydgoszcz in 2001 and a distinction at the National Jazz Competition in Elbląg in 2001. Together with the big band of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, he won the second prize at the XVII Big Band Festival in Nowy Tomyśl. He is the laureate of the 1st and 2nd prize at the Composition Competition in Poznań organized by the Polish Association of Choirs and Orchestras Macierz. In 2013, with the Kanaan band, he won first place and the audience award at the 3rd Christian Playing Festival.

Maciej Afanasjew's composition "The best" was performed at The New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall in 2011. He has arranged for Basi Włodarska and the Anova quartet, U Studni band, Happy Big Band. He is the author of music performed during the celebrations of the 10th Papal Day in Bydgoszcz.

He teaches at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk. In 2011, he led the violin class and big band during the 41st International Jazz Workshops in Chodzież. Maciej Afanasjew is the author of Jazz Passages for violin published by the Publishing House of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.
