London Calling – Sinfonietta Cracovia plays with Londoners

Sinfonietta Cracovia, in the year of the orchestra's thirtieth anniversary, announced a strategic collaboration with the London Sinfonietta – this strengthens one of the pillars of the Krakow ensemble's activities, which is the exploration of new music. The curator of the series in 2024 will be Andrew Burke, the head of the London Sinfonietta.

The Sinfonietta Nova series is becoming a platform for exchanging the most interesting trails in new music, as well as a dialogue between cultures. 'The assumptions of the series are clear and impressive, just like the artistic quality of Sinfonietta Cracovia' – said Andrew Burke during the press conference inaugurating the jubilee year. 'We are very happy that we can collaborate on the Sinfonietta Nova series, helping to create new music that, as we hope, will engage and inspire the audience.'

In three concerts of the series (in February, April, and October), leaders of the London ensemble will also perform on the stage of the Nowa Huta Theatre (which is a co-organizer of the series), enriching the sound of violins, violas, and cellos. At the end of last year, the purchase of master instruments for municipal orchestras was finalized, which is the result of two years of efforts by the city of Krakow to obtain funding from the general reserve of the state budget available to the Prime Minister. The concert 'London Calling' will be the first opportunity to hear Sinfonietta Cracovia in its core lineup equipped with world-class instruments from the best workshops in Europe.

The three concerts in the Sinfonietta Nova series this year will not only be joint music-making with artists from the Thames but also a meeting with new repertoire: music by English and American composers, as well as surprising and trance-like string sounds.

The first of the concerts (under the slogan London Calling) will take place on February 15 at 7 PM. It will certainly be a unique experience featuring the concertmaster of the London Sinfonietta, Jonathan Morton, and an odyssey through the music of the 20th and 21st centuries: from the works of Krzysztof Penderecki, through the monumental score of the Oscar-winning film 'The Pianist', to ambient sounds of contemporary artists and the premiere of a new piece by Zygmunt Krauze with the guest participation of the composer himself, who will sit at the piano.
