Silesian Quartet – 45 years of experience, over 150 world premieres of chamber works, thousands of performances in the most famous concert halls of the world, over 60 album releases, more than 20 nominations, 10 “Fryderyk” statuettes, and the most important – the “musical Oscar”, the Gramophone Classical Music Award.
They specialize in discovering, promoting, and recording Polish music – renowned for performing premieres under the watchful eyes of composers. Departing from the traditional hierarchical model of practicing music, the ensemble emphasizes exchange and collaboration with other musicians.
This season, the artists will bring closer the creativity of Sir Andrzej Panufnik on the 110th anniversary of the birth of the only Polish composer honored by Queen Elizabeth II with a noble title.
The sextet for strings composed in 1987 was named by Andrzej Panufnik Train of Thought – Pociąg myśli. However, the Polish translation of this title does not fully capture the composer’s intent. His concept indeed considers the ambiguity of the word “train”, which can mean both a train and a flow or stream of thought. Hence, it has been accepted that in Polish, this work is titled Ciąg myśli. The inspiration for this composition was Panufnik’s experiences during train travel, where the monotonous rhythm induced a flow of thoughts: the characteristic rhythmic element of the work is based on the sounds of the train wheels hitting the tracks. Nevertheless, Panufnik's work significantly differs from Honegger's Pacific 2.3.1, presenting rather a metaphor of picturesque and mysterious landscapes and thoughts fleeting through the human mind, just as constantly changing images seen from the train window. The program will be complemented by works of native British composers: Gustav Holst and Joseph Holbrooke.
