The black comedy "Who Wants to Be a Jew?" directed by Jacek Braciak tells the story of a family gathering that unexpectedly reveals weaknesses, fears, and prejudices. The author of the play, Marek Modzelewski, as always, stirs the pot. He portrays an intellectual family that – although they do not want to admit it – is not free from prejudices, narcissism, and deeply rooted stereotypical thinking. How will educated, "cultured" people react when one of them announces that they intend to convert to Judaism? Modzelewski holds up a mirror in which society's image is precisely reflected.
“Modzelewski's play is excellently written and is special to me because it addresses many issues that have occupied me for years. Jewishness, identity, intolerance, family, love – one could list them for a long time. In many respects, this play is painful, it holds up a mirror to us. But to see oneself in that mirror, to perform a dissection, one must have the courage for that confrontation,” emphasizes Braciak. “In my opinion, the play 'Who Wants to Be a Jew?' operates on many levels; for me, the balance between serious and buffoonish, gravity and irony is important in its realization. Often, very serious issues can be discussed using humor, distance, and irony,” he adds.
Reviews:
"Jacek Braciak made a brilliant directorial debut with the play 'Who Wants to Be a Jew?' by Marek Modzelewski at the Powszechny Theatre in Łódź. [...] The actors play excellently: they do not defend their characters but make them people full of inconsistencies, because that is who we are. We like some, criticize others, which, as the finale shows, requires uncompromisingness toward oneself as well [...]" (Jacek Cieślak, "Rzeczpospolita")
"Ewa Pilawska successfully and devotedly transforms the Łódź stage into a comedy house and proves how much this disparaged genre in Poland can hold. Braciak's 'Who Wants to Be a Jew?' fits perfectly into Pilawska's assumptions. Initially, it provokes laughter, entertains with excellently written dialogues, but from the first scene, it awakens an underlying unease. [...] The actors of Powszechny play brilliantly. They do not resort to gags, they prefer subtle tones. The aura of the characters is more important than speaking directly. [...] The Łódź 'Who Wants to Be a Jew?' provides satisfaction on many levels. Because Modzelewski can be exhibited in various ways, Braciak proved that he has an ear for literature, attentiveness, and sensitivity towards the actors and is a professional full of depth. Because it is a comedy and not a comedy in one. Gustaw Holoubek used to repeat that the line between buffoonery and seriousness in theater is on the edge of a knife" (Jacek Wakar, monthly "Kraków and the World")
"This is one of the best performances at Powszechny in recent years. It is worth watching - both for the good acting and intelligent entertainment" (Izabella Adamczewska, "Gazeta Wyborcza")
