Considered the best interpreter in history of roles like Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen or Rudolf in Puccini's La Bohème. Unmatched in both musical and sacred repertoire. Before turning 30, he performed on the most prestigious stages in Europe and North America, and his name was known throughout the musical world. As one of the few classical artists, he can gather tens of thousands of spectators at his outdoor concerts.
Born in 1946 in Barcelona, José Carreras showed great musical talent from a young age. He made his debut at the age of 8, singing on the radio La Donna e Mobile from Verdi's Rigoletto, and three years later he was already stepping on the stage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. His career began to develop at an incredibly fast pace from the role in Verdi's Nabucco in 1970. The Ovation magazine described the voice of the young Spaniard as sweet, lyrical, filled with color, clear and true, possessing sensual beauty, which together gives an extraordinary effect, and San Francisco Opera director Lotfi Mansouri said of Carreras: He is the best opera singer I have worked with, his musicality, intelligence, dramatic abilities, not to mention his wonderful voice, make him a complete artist. What is unusual about Carreras is that at the age of 28, when most opera singers are just starting their careers, he already had 24 leading roles in various operas in Europe and North America and debuted on the most prestigious stages in the world: - Vienna Staatsoper in 1974, as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto; - London's Royal Opera House in 1974, as Alfredo in La Traviata; - New York Metropolitan Opera in 1974, as Cavaradossi in Tosca; - La Scala Milan in 1975, as Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball).
In 1987, at the height of his fame, the artist was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Despite doctors giving him only a 10% chance of survival, Carreras defeated the disease and returned to music. He also became involved in charitable activities and the fight against the deadly disease. Carreras is a versatile artist - unmatched in opera roles and in lighter musical and sacred repertoire. He is also known for his excellent interpretation of Spanish and Italian songs, and the carols performed by him are considered the most beautiful in the world. His albums have repeatedly gone gold and platinum, and the artist has countless awards, decorations, titles, and medals to his credit, both for his musical and charitable activities.
