In May 2024, it will be two hundred years since the first performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's IX Symphony. It was almost performed in London, rather than in Vienna, to which he moved permanently from his hometown of Bonn in 1792. However, the 'last sustaining spirit of German music' was persuaded by friends and â after just two rehearsals with the full ensemble â the work was performed in Vienna by an orchestra composed of professionals and amateurs, a choir, and soloists. Although reviewers pointed out the imperfections of this first interpretation, the audience received the new symphony with great applause, which unfortunately Beethoven could not hear â almost completely deaf at the time. It was only when turned around by one of the soloists facing the audience that he could witness the ecstatic joy expressed by the enthusiastic listeners.
The Schiller text of the Ode to Joy, which resounds in the final section, inspired Beethoven from an early age. The first plans for its musicalization began to take shape while he was still in Bonn, but he decided to realize them only in his final work. It seemed as though he was aware that the poetic vision of brotherhood in the pursuit of joy and happiness requires perfection of form and maturity of musical language. The emerging quintessence of the initial Allegro, full of vitality, the Scherzo in Vivace tempo, and the contrasting lyrical Andante form a complete expression leading to the summative entirety of the extensive final section. It is here that from the dialogue of orchestral instruments emerges a moving and universal in its message song of the soloists and choir.
