Event Description

At the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, the first famous jazz schools emerged, such as Berklee College of Music. Today, jazz education programs at higher education institutions operate in over 500 schools. However, before this happened, for decades, jazz education was informal. Musicians learned from each other by attending concerts, taking private lessons, or eavesdropping on how others practiced.

A popular form that emerged in the 1950s was the so-called Jazz Clinics, which were informal meetings of experienced musicians with anyone eager to absorb knowledge about jazz improvisation and arrangement, which at that time had already been somewhat independently described in several important publications for the history of music.

However, the paths of jazz education were sometimes completely unexpected, like the story of a certain student who, fascinated by Charlie Parker, brought recording equipment to New York clubs like Minton’s Playhouse and hid it under the table, thus 'accidentally' documenting the incredible solos of jazz musicians, which are still the subject of study for young adepts today.

Jazz workshops with guest participation from experienced musicians are now a very vital form of education for jazz, allowing participants to confront their skills with musicians from other countries and cultures. Also, very often during such meetings, new collaborations, projects, or bands are formed.

This time, the concert will be a summary of such workshops, which will be led specifically for jazz students at the Academy of Art in Szczecin by Danish drummer Kasper Tom Christiansen.
