Manuscript found in an ashtray
Belcia, the heroine of Izabela Tadry's novel, is in constant motion: from one hotel room to another, from her mother's arms to her aunt's, from a man to her lover, from one romance to the next adventure. Her (...) impressive hair is the building material from which the ideal daughter is to emerge, a well-mannered young lady, an unattainable sex bomb, a faithful wife, a responsible mother, a femme fatale, a woman-child, a girlfriend, a confidante, a goddess. The contemporary woman certainly has so many paths to choose from! (...)
Above the real characters, another, key figure hovers: the mysterious “Mr.”, to whom Belcia directs her story. Humor and camp collide with ostentatiously non-modern lyricism, with a confession of great love, fragmented but still pulsating beneath the surface, which Belcia directs to the love of her life. We will never know if “Mr.” exists; however, we know he is the model of a lover that Belcia will seek in every encountered man.
How to be oneself in a world where traditional roles are played out, defective, and narrow, yet still firmly sit under the skin, while new ones are only just beginning to take shape? What does it mean to be oneself in today's reality, and is an authentic encounter with a partner at all possible?
In Małgorzata Maciejewska's adaptation, the cheeky humor of the novel resonates fully. We have operetta, absurdity, and camp, as well as tragicomic standup. A journey through men, hairstyles, and hotel rooms, full of stumbles and painfully mundane disappointments and mistakes seems to have no end, and its heroine – to be indestructible. The depth of feelings, faith in encounters, and fulfillment in a loving relationship are her fuel. And that perhaps makes her touching. Belcia's hair can be cut – and it will grow back.
