Heitor Villa-Lobos

Born in 1887 in Rio de Janeiro, he was a composer who revolutionized Brazilian music by breaking away from academic tradition. Initially, his works were considered too modern by critics, but over time they gained well-deserved recognition.
From a young age, the artist was exposed to music. Famous musicians gathered in his home, singing and playing until dawn. He early on became acquainted with the works of J. S. Bach, which inspired him to compose 'Bachianas Brasileiras'.
As a young man, he traveled across Brazil, closely getting to know the folklore of his land. He was greatly impressed by the diversity of folk instruments and the customs associated with music. These experiences became the impetus for composing 'O Guia Prático' - a cycle of folk songs intended for teaching in schools.
He presented his first works in 1915. These included compositions for guitar such as 'Suíte Popular Brasileira', 'Amazonas', and 'Uirapuru', as well as chamber and symphonic works. Subsequently, the artist had the opportunity to showcase his talent outside his country by presenting String Quartet No. 2 in Buenos Aires. In 1922, he performed in São Paulo during the Modern Art Week, where works such as 'Danças Características Africanas' and 'Impressões da Vida Mundana' could be heard.
Thanks to the help of friends and the Guinle brothers, Heitor Villa-Lobos moved to Paris. There, he was introduced to the artistic world by pianist Arthur Rubinstein. Upon returning to Brazil, a well-known Brazilian poet and art critic said: 'Villa-Lobos has just returned from Paris. It is expected that anyone returning from Paris comes back full of Paris. While Villa-Lobos returned full of himself.'
The composer traveled again to Paris, where he organized concerts and composed works. He then returned to his country, engaging in the realization of a concert in São Paulo and presenting his revolutionary plan for Music Education to the São Paulo State Department of Education. A few years later, he was asked by the then Secretary of Education in Rio de Janeiro to create and oversee the so-called Seman, or General Administration of Music and Artistic Education, which introduced music and choral singing education in schools. The artist also presented his education plan in Prague, Berlin, and Barcelona, and in 1933, the Orchestra bearing his name was established. During this time, the opera 'Colombo' was created to commemorate the centenary of Carlos Gomes, 'Ciclo Brasileiro', and 'Descobrimento do Brasil' ('Discovery of Brazil') - music for the film of the same title.
In 1944, the artist's friend Leopold Stokowski asked him to select the best Brazilian musicians to record a collection of 'Brazilian Native Music' in Brazil with The American Youth Orchestra. In the following years, the composer traveled to the United States, where he performed on numerous stages. In 1945, he founded the Brazilian Academy of Music. He composed 'Floresta do Amazonas' for the soundtrack of a Metro Goldwyn Mayer film. He performed in Israel, Lisbon, Paris, and Rome. He returned to Brazil for the anniversary ceremony of the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro.
Due to health issues, he underwent treatment and passed away in 1959.
