His debut is described as one of the musical revelations of recent years, a feat that few artists can boast of. Even fewer can maintain the high form, which is confirmed by receiving another Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Porterâs voice and style of performing music are compared to legends such as Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder.
It was a close call for Porter, a scholarship student at the University of San Diego, who almost dedicated himself to a sports career. Fortunately for his fans, instead of American football, he chose singing. As he admits, local creators, including his most prominent mentor Kamau Kenyatta, had a significant influence on his decision to dedicate himself to music.
Kenyatta invited Porter to a recording studio in Los Angeles, where he was spotted by flutist Hubert Laws. Since then, Porterâs career has been gaining momentum. His debut album 'Water,' released in 2010, brought him fame and his first Grammy nomination in the category of 'Best Jazz Vocal Album.'
The album 'Be Good,' released two years earlier, also received critical acclaim, resulting in over a million streams and another Grammy nomination, this time in the category of 'Best Traditional R&B Performance.' Experts praise Porter for his ability to manipulate his voice, build tension, and achieve perfection in performing songs.
In 2014, his third album 'Liquid Spirit' won a Grammy Award for 'Best Jazz Vocal Album.' Additionally, as the first jazz album in history, it was streamed over 20 million times on streaming services.
In 2017, Porter received his second Grammy Award for the album 'Take Me to the Alley,' again in the category of 'Best Jazz Vocal Album.'
