Glenn Gould

Don Hunstein
Glenn Gould was a fascinating and exceptional artist with an unparalleled musical imagination, as well as extraordinary technical precision, a genius pianist, and the greatest interpreter of Bach's works. His creations are timeless and delight not only critics and enthusiasts of classical music but also novice listeners. Despite deciding at one point in his life to stop performing, he continued to win the hearts of music lovers. He was called an eccentric master, 'the James Dean of the piano,' a genius, a nonconformist, and a world-class musician. A madman and a perfectionist, who hummed to himself while playing Bach, because he lived and breathed the music of Bach. Full of passion and obsession. Lost in music, in the process of creation. The world was his stage, and the studio was his entire universe. Sitting at his small piano desk, he did not simply play the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schönberg, Hindemith, Brahms, or his beloved Johann Sebastian Bach – he gave them a new form in a delicate, individual, and wonderful way. This year, this genius would have celebrated his 80th birthday. His legacy is a collection of historical masterpieces that will never be forgotten.

The recordings of 'Ophelia-Lieder' were made in January 1966. Glenn Gould was accompanied by the world-renowned soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Although Gould was greatly impressed by her vocal skills, the recording session almost ended in failure: Schwarzkopf was known for her strict reading of the score, while Gould had a rather free approach to the composer's instructions. Nevertheless, the result of this collaboration is an extraordinary recording of Strauss's work.

The Acoustic Orchestrations presents the virtuosic Piano Sonata No. 5, recorded by Gould in 1970, and for the first time, fully 'orchestrated' but never fully realized during his lifetime. The reconstruction and realization of the Scriabin recording is the work of Gould's student, Paul Théberge, who says: 'Sonata No. 5 was Gould's first and most ambitious multi-channel experiment: many microphones were placed throughout the studio, Gould planned his final mixes like a film editor assembling a series of close-ups and distances, sharp cuts, and dispersions. The results, in turn, are subtle yet dramatic, giving an acoustic dimension to musical recordings that truly possess an 'orchestral' character.' The release also includes a new multi-track mix of two preludes by Scriabin and a previously released recording of Sibelius, allowing for a closer insight into Gould's technique.
