Baroque is an era mainly associated with splendor and ornamentation. The beginning of this era in music is considered to be the end of the 16th century, and the end of this period is marked by the death of Johann Sebastian Bach (1750). Interestingly, this era in music is completely different from other art forms, as it is characterized by harmony and structure. The main form is basso continuo, an accompaniment created in harmony with the bass part. For this reason, in the Baroque era, compositions such as rondos, sonatas, suites, concerti grossi, fugues, variations, preludes, and concertos become popular. Baroque music also combines many vocal or instrumental groups composed of different artists and instruments with accompaniment of basso continuo. In this era, modal scales are abandoned in favor of the major and minor scales used to this day. On the other hand, Baroque compositions are very expressive, as music, like literature, is meant to express humanity. Baroque separates vocal music from instrumental music. Consequently, instrumental technique evolves, and individual instruments are modernized. Compositions for groups of instruments are also created, and a significant number of instruments take part in a concert (hence the difference between large and small ensembles). Some of the most outstanding composers of this era were Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Claudio Monteverdi, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Georg Philipp Telemann, Antonio Vivaldi.
As an excellent example of Baroque music, we recommend listening to the "Spring" from the "Four Seasons" concert by Antonio Vivaldi performed by Giuliano Carmignoli.
We also encourage you to listen to a fragment of the "Badinerie" from Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor by J. S. Bach performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.
Baroque today
As proof that music transcends eras, we suggest a piece by American rapper, composer, and actor using the alias Coolio based on the canon Canon in D Major by Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel dating back to 1680.
