May 5–17, 2025
The rich program of the 85th edition of Musica Moderna traditionally includes chamber, electronic, and audiovisual concerts, as well as meetings with creators and workshops. The audience will also have the opportunity to learn about the fruits of collaboration between students from Łódź's artistic universities – the Academy of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts. The festival will take place from May 5 to 17, 2025.
At the 85th Musica Moderna festival, many artists will be guests. Czech composer, educator, and music journalist Ivo Medek will share his insights on the challenges facing contemporary creators (May 5). Another opportunity to meet composers will be a discussion panel around the book The Soul of the Entertainers by Marietta Morawska-Büngeler (May 7), featuring the heroes of the publication – Rafał Augustyn, Krzysztof Baculewski, Krzysztof Knittel, Jerzy Kornowicz, Stanisław Krupowicz, and Tadeusz Wielecki. A piano recital by Sára Medek (May 5) will show how new music corresponds with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, while a marimba recital by Julianna Siedler-Smuga (May 7) will transport us into the world of multimedia and performance.
An important part of each edition of Musica Moderna is the presentation of works by young creators. This time, student compositions will also be performed at several concerts: Tuesday evening will feature the premieres of chamber works (May 6), while Thursday will showcase pieces utilizing electronics (May 8). On the same day, the audience will be able to familiarize themselves with the effects of collaboration between students from Łódź's artistic universities – the Academy of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts. The spring edition of Moderna is also a time for the presentation of diploma works, summarizing the experiences gained during composition studies at the Academy of Music in Łódź (May 15–17). An accompanying event of the festival will be a multimedia performance prepared by students of the Łódź Academy of Music and the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts in Poznań (June 27).
The organizers of Musica Moderna are the Department of Composition at the Academy of Music in Łódź and the Polish Composers' Union, with partners including the Association for the Promotion of Artistic Initiatives OPERATIVA, the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, and the Urban Cultural Zone: Widzew Wschód. Funded from the budget of the City of Łódź.
