46th International Festival Wratislavia Cantans

September 2–18, 2011

Wrocław, Lower Silesia

Andrzej Kosendiak – General Director

Paul McCreesh – Artistic Director

The program of the 46th edition of the International Festival Wratislavia Cantans, which is planned for three weekends in September 2011, is built around three different themes.

The first of the themes, titled 'Saints and Sinners', will transport listeners back to the medieval period. According to the assumption, one of the currents of this part of the Festival will be storytelling, with the Schola Teatru Węgajty recreating the medieval liturgical drama Ludus Danielis. We will also host Benjamin Bagby, who will take on the role of a bard in his version of the epic Beowulf. The musical traditions of the courts will be presented by the Orlando Consort.

The second, most extensive part of the Festival will address a theme illustrated by a quote from the medieval Gregorian hymn Media vita in morte sumus (translation: In the midst of life, we are in death). This part will begin with Symphony No. 8 by Krzysztof Penderecki, 'Songs of Transience'. During the Festival, we wish to honor the memory of the great Polish composer who passed away in 2010 – Henryk Mikołaj Górecki – we will present his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.

In 2011, it will be ten years since the cruel events that took place on September 11, 2001, in New York. We want to commemorate the anniversary of the tragedy with a concert by the Wrocław Festival Orchestra, which will perform reflective works by Herbert Howells, Samuel Barber, and the extraordinary Symphony No. 1 by Elgar. This new orchestra, led by the artistic director of the Festival – Paul McCreesh – will consist of outstanding Polish musicians and international stars performing as guests.

During the Festival, there will also be a series of evening concerts presenting instrumental recitals in the most beautiful churches of Wrocław. Nicholas Daniel and Pieter Wispelwey will perform works by Britten, Rachel Podger will present pieces by Bach, and Henning Kraggerud will showcase the creativity of Ysaye. The Festival will also have the honor of hosting the renowned, legendary harpsichordist – Gustav Leonhardt.

The guiding theme of the closing weekend of the Festival will be: 'Biblical Heroes'. The Festival will conclude with the masterpiece of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Elijah. During this concert, the combined forces of recognized soloists, Gabrieli Consort & Players, and the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir will be conducted by the artistic director of the Festival, Paul McCreesh.
