"Angels in America, or demons in Poland" – Teatr BARAKAH (Teatr BARAKAH) - tickets

The starting point for the performance is the well-known drama titled 'Angels in America'. However, it is merely an inspiration that has pushed the creators to craft a story taking place here and now, in 21st century Poland.

'Angels in America, or demons in Poland' is a documentary theater. The scriptwriter Michał Telega invited a team of people at various stages of their artistic journey, primarily those who are just starting out. They measure themselves against the everyday places from which they come, in which they grew up, and from which they left in search of dreams. Telega's script was based on many hours of conversations with them, among them, our discussions, which became confrontations of experiences, full of emotions that can both destroy and relax.

Personal experiences of the artists pushed into an angelic structure are stories of hiding, coming out of the closet, more and less spectacular coming outs, personal stories, and contemporary narratives. Our stories have been documented, but anyone can find themselves in them, including you! Because after all, everyone has something to hide, something they fear to bring out of the closet to society.

Teatr BARAKAH stands out among other cultural institutions as a private repertory theater that has been paving the way for original productions for several years, boldly commenting on the surrounding reality in the spirit of modern theater. In BARAKAH, iconic literary texts such as 'The Children of the Zoo Station', 'Other People', 'Mother Joanna from the Angels', 'Small Breed Dogs' and films like 'Misery' and 'Breaking Waves' are brought to the stage. The latest productions of BARAKAH include 'Angels in America, or demons in Poland' inspired by Tony Kushner's famous drama, 'Twin Peaks: I Will Knock on the Red Door' inspired by David Lynch's series, and 'Dreamers' inspired by the work of Bernardo Bertolucci. The very first production of BARAKAH, 'The Closet', resonated loudly across Europe, culminating in an acting award for Monika Kufel at the International Festival 'Actor of Europe' in Macedonia. Teatr BARAKAH was founded in 2004 by graduate of the Krakow PWST, director and actor Michał Anioł Nowicki, and graduate of the Wrocław PWST, actress, set designer, and costume designer Monika Kufel. Over 60 performances have been produced in the theater (including over 30 premieres, averaging 4 premieres per year in recent years), featuring outstanding directors, actors, playwrights, composers, set designers, and other artists from all over Poland. Since 2013, the theater's headquarters has been located at Paulińska 28 in a tenement that was a Jewish Mikveh before World War II, known as 'The Ritual Bath of the People of Israel'. Thanks to this amazing space, which combines history with industrial decor, the theater has a unique atmosphere, and the stage with historic Dutch tiles is perfect for presenting original productions. Performances of Teatr BARAKAH regularly represent Kraków at Polish and international theater festivals, often returning with awards. BARAKAH has already received several dozen theater awards, including the most important one in Poland – the Leon Schiller Award for outstanding achievements in the field of theater awarded by the Association of Polish Stage Artists.
